Here's the download on 2 factor authentication, why you should use it, and where you can find it in Minim.
What is 2 Factor Authentication?
Two Factor Authentication (2FA) is an extra layer of security— beyond your password— to gain access to an application. When you login to an app with 2FA turned on, you are prompted to enter both your password and then a one-time code. The one-time code is generated by a 2FA app. This is far more secure than password-only because passwords can uncovered and leaked on the dark web.
How to login with 2 Factor Authentication
Many apps use an open standard for 2FA called Time-Based One-Time Password Algorithm (TOTP). By employing the open standard, the software allows users to use a preferred authentication app to generate their one-time codes. Here are some popular options:
A quick survey of the Minim team showed a variety of app choices. I use Google Authenticator for iOS because it's simple. But if you're already a LastPass user for password store, for example, consider using theirs.
Notably, there are applications with custom implementations of 2FA. Often times, they use their own app platforms to accomplish the 2FA login. For example, when logging into Google Docs, you may be asked to authenticate by opening your Gmail mobile app.
How to enable 2 Factor Authentication with Minim
Minim supports 2FA in our Care Portal, and we recommend all customers use it in addition to secure password best practices. This will better safeguard your Minim account from unauthorized logins.
To require your Care Portal users to authenticate using 2FA:
- Login to the Minim Care Portal
- Navigate to the Settings tab
- In the Settings tab, you will see Two Factor Authentication section. Set Require two factor authentication? to Yes.
After you have clicked to confirm this setting, users will be presented with a Two Factor Authentication upon next login.
